Year in Review

At MaSa Partners, we invest in early-stage, mission-driven companies that are delivering transformative and scalable solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Over the past year, we have seen commercial growth and increased impact across several companies in our portfolio. Below we celebrate some of the inspiring moments and developments of 2023.

Over 2023, Arcadia continued to play a transformational role in the global energy transition as its energy data platform Arc catalyzed more businesses than ever to move towards a zero-carbon future. CEO Kiran Bhatraju said, "I fundamentally believe that data is the key to unlocking rapid electrification and a rapid move away from fossil fuels." 

In addition to Arc, Arcadia has the nation's largest community solar portfolio, with more than 1.8 GW of solar resources under management.

In August, Arcadia released its inaugural Corporate Responsibility Report, providing an important roadmap for companies seeking transparency and accountability in environmental and CSR areas.

mOm’s Essential Incubator continued to save lives around the world. In a moving report from BBC News, Ukrainian doctors explained the vital role the Essential Incubator has been playing in saving the lives of pre-term babies in the war-ravaged country.

In July, the UK-based company celebrated their founder & CEO, James Roberts, receiving the prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering Princess Royal Silver Medal from HRH The Princess Royal. James and the Essential Incubator were invited onto the famous BBC Breakfast red sofa and were also featured in The Sunday Times, Sky News, ITV News, BBC Radio 4, The Mirror, and Daily Express.

In October, James was honored with a metro station on the UK Royal Academy of Engineering and Transport for London's Underground Engineering Icons Tube map

This year mOm also won the Medical Technologies Category in the UK Department for Business and Trade's Life Sciences Innovator Showcase.

Solar Holler is on a mission to repower Appalachia and was named West Virginia’s premier residential and commercial solar contractor for 2023 by Solar Power World.

In 2023, the company also announced the largest rooftop PPA ever in the state of West Virginia, along with Wayne County Schools and Senator Joe Manchin.

Throughout 2023, Abingdon Health continued to be a thought leader in democratizing access to affordable and effective point-of-care diagnostics. Salistick, the first-ever saliva pregnancy test and one of Time Magazine’s 200 Best Inventions of 2023, was rolled out over the summer in retail stores across the UK. 

The company’s Simply Test has now expanded to 12 lateral flow, home products. Abingdon Health also partnered to develop and produce Eco-Flo, a plastic-free, compostable cassette for lateral flow tests that was featured in Design Week.

RPD Energy continued to make it simple and cost-effective for US corporations and institutions to achieve their energy sustainability goals. As a pioneer of 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy (CFE) products, RPD Energy has begun to incorporate new, additional power purchase agreements for solar and wind energy into their end-user friendly solutions.

RPD Energy were one of over a hundred signatories to the 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact in the shared pursuit of driving systemic change to mitigate climate change and ensure access to clean and affordable electricity for all.

Winners of the Earthshot Prize, Coral Vita turned up the volume on their mission to restore the world’s dying reefs. At their coral farm in Grand Bahama, they scaled up coral out-planting and restoration efforts, hiring nine new employees. 

The Prince and Princess of Wales in November released a video exploring the reef with Coral Vita and the NYT covered the company's vital reef restoration work in the Persian Gulf.  

Over 2023, they launched brand partnerships with Corona Beer and sneaker firm Cariuma, and are now one of The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism’s premier destinations.  

The team, led by Sam Teicher and Gator Halpern, continue to ramp up coral production for the ‘BahamaReefs’ partnership, financed by the Global Fund for Coral Reefs, with a portion of the coral farm allocated for Bahamian NGOs to establish a mangrove nursery to restore forests destroyed by Hurricane Dorian.

Led by Jenny Abramson and Heidi Patel, Rethink Impact continues its inspirational work as the largest VC to invest in and elevate women-founded and operated companies.

Some of Rethink’s female-led companies that operate across a number of verticals and have excelled in 2023 are Spring Health, CareAcademy, AclimaGuild, and Bold.

With the 2023 launch of the Farmstand Nook, Lettuce Grow continued to empower consumers to be closer to their food by growing different produce in the home. The Lettuce Grow range continued to be a massive gifting hit

In 2023, BeeReaders raised $3.5M to expand its Spanish literacy solutions across Latin America and the US. With this funding, Beereaders is now providing its personalized reading and writing programs to at least half a million K-12 students across the Americas.

In 2023 RPD Energy continued to make it simple and cost effective for US corporations and institutions to achieve their energy sustainability goals. In 2023 Restorative Botanicals continued to expand their offering of organic CBD.

Brian Potts and Abigail Wuest, the Board Chair and CEO of Goods Unite Us, were interviewed on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange for Fintech TV and Bloomberg TV.

The company's social media posts have been blowing up. Two posts revealing Democrat and Republican political contributions of fast food chains got 1.75m views on TikTok.

MediCardia Health have been successfully evolving their smart digital medicine platform, releasing a new mobile app in August that connects patients to the sources of their health records and data, and announcing collaborations with Caerus Strength, Human Longevity Inc, OptimizeEp and Encompass Remote,

Another MaSa portfolio company in the energy sector, the software-enabled retail electricity provider David Energy, closed a $20.5 million Series A round of funding in March, and have been successfully working to scale their bundled offering.

MaSa Partners salutes a strong and impactful year for many of its portfolio companies, and recognizes the resilience and nimbleness of many in this challenging venture environment. We look forward to our companies coming out of the gate even stronger in 2024 and delivering practical, scalable solutions for some of the world’s most pressing problems.
